Franklin Hall

In 1926, Franklin Hall opened as one of the original buildings on the Kent State campus. Now, it is the hi-tech home of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where students get hands-on experience and hone multimedia skill sets. With its cutting edge facilities, including a collaborative student media newsroom, an HD broadcast studio, and modern video and audio editing suites, it provides a state-of-the-art education. Hanson named DTA winner
More than 560 faculty members were nominated for this year’s Kent State University Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award (DTA). Ten finalists were chosen, including JMC Professor Gary Hanson, who learned in October that he is one of the three university-wide winners.
According to the Alumni Association website, the Distinguished Teaching Award “is the university’s most prestigious honor in teaching. The award is presented annually to three full-time faculty members who demonstrate extraordinary teaching in the classroom and a devotion to touching the lives of students.”

PRSSA wins KSU Excellence Award
The organization, advised by Prof. Michele Ewing, received the university's Organization Excellence Award at the 2011 Leadership and Honors Awards ceremony. It was selected for its outstanding contributions to its members and the student body.
Carl Hirsch, JMC benefactor, dies
Hirsch was former head of Malrite, parent of WMMS-FM, Legacy Broadcasting, and OmniAmerica. His generous gift of $500,000 to Kent JMC created the cutting-edge Hirsch Media Convergence Lab. Hirsch attended Kent State, and in 2000 the university awarded him a doctorate of humane letters. Read more about Hirsch here.
JMC junior wins national scholarship
Jeannette Reyes, a junior broadcast news major, has won the Ken Kashiwahara Scholarship sponsored by the Radio/Television Digital News Assn. The $2,500 award was developed for minority students seeking a career in journalism. Reyes has been very active with TV2 and Black Squirrel Radio.
JMC Upward Bound class wins media award
The Upward Bound class taught at Kent JMC last summer by adjunct professor Danielle Wiggins has won a Bronze Award in the National Upward Bound TRIO Quest competition. Here's more information and a link to the winning video produced by the students.

What We Do
"God, I just really hope we win."

Sophomore magazine journalism major Emily Inverso created a documentary film during the annual Art of Fashion design competition.
The show featured design categories like Romantic Rock, Hard and Soft, Organic versus Mechanized and other contrasting ideas. With more than 60 designs entered, guests watched an array of garment lines, each set to music chosen by the designers.
The WWII Project
On the anniversary of a day Franklin D. Roosevelt said "would live in infamy," JMC students in the Photojournalism II class came together to celebrate this project, which honors local WWII veterans through student-created images, sound and video.
