Stories Judge: Jeff Geissler

I've been editorial and advertising photographer for more than 14 years. Based in Santa Fe since 2002, my work includes assignments for the Associated Press, The Journal Santa Fe, Getty Images, and various local businesses. Prior to moving to Santa Fe, I worked in San Francisco, where he photographed assignments for Bloomberg News, AP Wide World Photos and various publications, and in New York, where I covered news, feature, and celebrity events for The Associated Press and other news organizations and corporations. I began my professional career as a staff photographer at The Sun News, a daily newspaper in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Overall I would definitely like to see a bigger variety of subject, rather than 3 immigration stories.

First Place: “Boderland” by Luis Sánchez Saturno. Lots of nice images, I especially liked the night vision photo, the close up of the hand gun, the lightning storm, and the shot inside the draining pipe. My favorite is the 2 immigrants crossing the border on Johnson's Ranch in Southern New Mexico. Luis obviously had excellent access to both the Border Patrol and the Mexicans crossing the border, and he used his access well.  My only suggestion is better editing. We don't need to see 32 images. I don't think the photo of the flags, the thermometer, the plaque, and maybe one of the fence shots adds much to the story.

Second Place: “Growing Season” by Gary Harwood. Again, lots of nice images, but too many. I really liked the money dance, roller skating, the cowboy boots and beer bottles, the clothes line, the Bishop preaching on the basketball court, and the costume party photos. They bring a real human touch to the story. Excellent use of color. I don't think the story needs the airplane exhaust trails, the some of the field shots, and maybe one of the school photos. The reason I didn't pick this as my favorite is because I've seen this story done so many times, although I think this might be my favorite.

Third Place: “Borderhunters” by Glenn Luther.
Good job in showing the two sides of how Americans are dealing with the border issue, both with law enforcement and with the Samaritans. But I would like to see more of what the Mexicans who want to cross the border are doing. Not just an interview with one man. Show, don't tell.

Honorable Mention: “The old Man in the Sky” by Emily Rasinski. This story had so much potential, and I'm sure still does. It's missing key photos of the man flying. This is what the story is about. Emily, I say keep working on it, and you'll have a winner.

BORDERLAND

U.S.-Mexico border by the numbers.
1.14: Number, in millions, of U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions along the U.S.-Mexico border in 2004.
9,700: Number of Border Patrol agents in 2005.
1.4: Budget, in billions of dollars, for border enforcement in the
Southwest.

GROWING SEASON

There are approximately 130 agricultural migrant camps in Ohio. Tucked away from plain sight, these temporary communities for seasonal workers are scattered along dirt roads or on the corners of farm fields. The conditions of these camps vary and often mirror the commitment of the farm owners toward their seasonal workers. This project depicts the simple life of one of those camps.

BORDER HUNTERS

"How would you like to work all your life just to eat. Just to eat. You are not gonna have anything extra, just to eat. You work and eat and that's it. You can't educate you kids, you can better their lives, you can't better your life..."
