Winner Notification

Winners will be notified by email on Friday, March 16, 2012. A list of scholarship winners will be posted in the Reading Room, 212 Franklin Hall, on Monday, March 19, 2012.

Awards Reception
The Awards Reception will be on Sunday, April 15, 2012. Parents and family will be invited to the Awards Reception and Ceremony.

How the winners are selected. 

1. Scholarship awards are based on professional promise, grades and need.
2. Scholarship awards are paid directly to your university account at the Bursar's Office, to be applied to tuition and other fees.

Eligibility

1. You must be an officially declared JMC major or pre-major.
2. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible.
3. You are not eligible if you plan to graduate before August, 2012.
   

Below are JMC scholarships available for 2012-2013.

American Society of Business Press Editors Scholarship. For any JMC student who intends to pursue a career in trade magazine publishing. 

Robert Burdock Award. For an outstanding newspaper, magazine, broadcast news, photojournalism, information design or public relations student. 

Ronald Dean Clark Scholarship in Editorial Writing. This scholarship was established in 2004 by family and friends of Mr. Clark, who passed away in 2003 for a student studying editorial or opinion writing. 

Walton D. Clarke Endowed Scholarship. For an outstanding student in the electronic media sequence. 

Cleveland Press Club Scholarship. For a newspaper, magazine, broadcast news, photojournalism or information design student. 

Edward Cliney Award. For an outstanding public relations major. 

Ralph C. Darrow Award. For an outstanding public relations major who also is a member of the Public Relations Society of America. 

Robert C. and Helen Westcott Dix Scholarship. Two awards for JMC students who are pursuing a career in news.  

Roger and Ada Fidler Scholarship. This scholarship, established in 2003, is intended for students of Latin American descent. 

 Wiliam A. Fisher Award: The Society of Professional Journalist presents this award to the outstanding graduating senior in news. Emeritus Professor Fisher, who funds the award, was adviser to the Kent Stater and the Society of Professional Journalists.  

Al Fitzpatrick Scholarship. Mr. Fitzpatrick is a JMC alumnus and the first African-American reporter at the Akron Beacon Journal. For a minority student with an interest in a JMC career.  

John Fowler Award. For a newspaper, magazine, broadcast news, photojournalism, information design or public relations major.  

Trudy and Allen Goodkin Award. For an outstanding advertising major who demonstrates creative thinking and a respect for and a proficiency in writing.  

Lloyd W. Hanson and Harvey E. Rahn Scholars Award. Associate Professor Gary Hanson and Associate Dean LuEtt Hanson give this scholarship in honor of their fathers. This scholarship is awarded to a JMC major who demonstrates a strong work ethic and was established in 2008.  

JMC Alumni Council Legacy Scholarship. For a student who is a child or a relative of a Kent State University School of Journalism and Mass Communication alumnus. If no child or relative applies, the scholarship is for a child or a relative of any KSU alum. 

Herb Kamm/Scripps Howard Scholarship. For a student planning a career in newspapers, magazines, broadcast news, photojournalism or information design.  

King Family Award.  This scholarship was established by James King, a JMC alumna, in 2010 for an incoming freshman who shows both need and merit.  The scholarship is renewable as long as the student maintains good standing in the School.  

Paul Ashby Lewis Scholarship. For an outstanding advertising major.  

Phil Macomber Scholarship. For a student pursuing a career in television. 

E. Zoe McCathrin Public Relations Scholarship. For an outstanding public relations major who also is a member of the Public Relations Society of America.  

BethAnn McClain Scholarship. For an outstanding journalism student with an interest in university and community service or environmental reporting.  

Robert McGruder Scholarship and Alumni Scholarship. For a minority student planning a career in newspapers, magazines, broadcast news, photojournalism or information design.  

Marge McNab Block Award: This award has been given since 1955 by the Toledo Balde to honor Marge McNab Block, feature editor of the Blade and a 1939 graduate who died of cancer. The award is given to the graduating senior woman in news with the highest grade point average.  

David A. Meeker Endowed Scholarship. For an outstanding public relations student, based on academic performance, financial need and leadership.  

Doug Moore Award. For an outstanding photojournalism or photo-illustration student.  

Frances B. Murphey Scholarship. For two outstanding young women who intend to pursue careers in news.  

William H. Oliver Fellowship in Public Affairs. This scholarship is awarded to students studying in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication who are participating in a public affairs activity such as the Washington Program in National Issues or the Columbus Program in Intergovernmental Issues. Mr. Oliver established this scholarship in 2002.  

Paul Poorman Scholarship. Mr. Poorman join the JMC faculty in 1991, after working in newspapers since 1976 and serving as a special assistant to KSU President Michael Schwartz.  His family established this scholarship in his memory. Up to two awards for outstanding newspaper or magazine majors. 

Portage Community Bank Award. This Award goes to two students who graduated from a Portage County high school, have demonstrated a financial need and are involved in Student Media. This is a new award started by Portage Community Bank's tradition of "Neighbors Serving Neighbors". 

Murray Powers Award. For a student planning a career in newspapers, magazines, broadcast news, photojournalism or information design. 

PRSSA Fellowship Award. This award is presented to an outstanding public relations major who is actively involved in the Kent State Chapter of Public Relations.  

Ludel Sauvageot Scholarship. For an outstanding public relations major. Special emphasis given to financial need.  

John L. Scott Endowed Scholarship. For an outstanding JMC student who intends to pursue a career in broadcasting.  

Robert K. Shaul Advertising Scholarship: This scholarship, endowed in 2001 by the Shaul family and the JMC Alumni Council, is presented to a student media employee who best exemplifies Rob's courage and sense os humor in facing life's challenges.  

Paula Slimak Scholarship. This scholarship honors the memory of students killed and injured on May 4, 1970, when alumna Paula Slimak was in graduate school. To mark her retirement in 2004 and thank the University for a lifetime of opportunities, Slimak established this scholarship to benefit a non-traditional student.  

Ralph W. and Bettie Smith Memorial Award: Ralph W. Smith, a retired railroad executive, died a few years ago, just a month shy of his 86th birthday. He and his wife Bettie's only connection with news, other that the fact that the eldest of his four sons is journalism professor Timothy D. Smith, was that they were news junkie. They read newspapers, watched television news and news talk shows, and surfed the Internet for news. They would have been pleased that their name will be linked to an award for news students.  

Robert Sorino Memorial Scholarship. For a talented photography student displaying a love of and dedication to the field of photography. The winner will be recognized for performance as a staff photographer on the Stater or Burr.  

Gene Stebbins/JMC Alumni Council Scholarship. This scholarship is for a JMC student who intends to pursue a career in broadcasting.  

Wallace H. and Peggy V. Stroud Scholarship. This scholarship is for deserving and outstanding students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Mr. Stroud established this scholarship in 2002.  

James M. Sutherland Scholarship: The Buckeye Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has provided this scholarship award for a part-time graduate student in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication who intends to pursue a career in newspaper, business and institutional publications or radio and television. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to graduate students working toward a master's degree. The Sutherland Fund was established in 1975, following the death of James M. Sutherland, who was business and financial editor of the Minneapolis Star, Chicago Bureau Chief of Business Week magazine and manager of copy control and production in Goodyear's public relations department, retiring in 1971. The fund was established by Mr. Sutherland's widow, Alva, and augmented by his son Scott. The Buckeye Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists administered the fund until its transfer to Kent State in 2002.  

William Taylor Scholarship. This scholarship, established in 1988, is in honor of the first Director of the School and is for outstanding JMC students majoring in any sequence. Professor Taylor remained as Director for 27 years.  

Thompson Family Award. This award, established in 2003 by Priscilla Johnson in honor of her family, is awarded to a first-generation college student intending to major in a School of Journalism and Mass Communication program.  

Loris C. Troyer Scholarship. For a student in journalism and mass communication interested in history and community journalism, with preference given to students from Portage and Summit counties.  

Nancy E. Whitehead Journalism Scholarship. This scholarship was established in 2004 by alumna Nancy E. Whitehead (B.A. 1979) to help prepare future journalism and advertising professionals.  

Other Scholarships open to JMC students

The John S. Knight Scholarships. The John S. Knight Scholarships are awarded by the Akron Press Club and are open to all journalism students at Kent State University, Akron University, Hiram College and any local journalism student studying out of state. 

Steven H. Walters Founders Scholarship. Steven Walters, a 1986 journalism graduate of Kent State University, was city editor of the Record-Courier. He received numerous honors during his career at the Marietta Times, Rubber and Plastics News and the Record Courier. This scholarship is meant to honor Steve's memory and ensure that he will be remembered by future generations of journalism majors.  To be named at a later date
