Gary Harwood has worked as a photographer for more than 27 years and is the co-author of Growing Season: The Life of a Migrant Community. The book won the 2007 Carter G. Woodson Honor Award from the National Council for the Social Studies and the 2007 Ohioana Book Award from the Ohioana Library Association. The book was also awarded a 2005 Artist and Communities Grant from the Ohio Arts Council, and was selected by Stark County’s Mayor’s Literacy Program for their annual One Book One Community reading program.

Harwood won the 2005 James R. Gordon Ohio Understanding Award from the Ohio News Photographers Association, the 2006 Individual Artist Grant for photography from the Ohio Arts Council, four national Circle of Excellence awards from The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and was named the 2001 University Photographers Association of America’s Photographer of the Year. His work has appeared in numerous national publications, including the Communication Arts Photo Annual and the Graphis Photo Annual, Sun Magazine and Double Take/Points of Entry.

He is an instructor for Kent State University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication where he teaches Visual Storytelling and other photography courses. He was also an instructor for the Unseen Cleveland photography project, a division of Unseen America, sponsored by the Service Employees International Union.

He lives in Kent, Ohio, with his wife, Carole.
