Franklin Hall
In 1926, Franklin Hall opened as one of the original buildings on the Kent State campus. Now, it is the hi-tech home of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where students get hands-on experience and hone multimedia skill sets. With its cutting edge facilities, including a collaborative student media newsroom, an HD broadcast studio, and modern video and audio editing suites, it provides a state-of-the-art education. JMC Professor named National Honor Society outstanding advisor for 2013
Jeff Fruit, professor and former JMC director, has been named the 2013 chapter advisor of the year for Kappa Tau Alpha (KTA), the national college honor society for journalism and mass communications. He will receive the William H. Taft Outstanding Advisor Award in August during the annual convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in Washington, D.C.

JMC finishes in top 10 of Hearst Competition
JMC finished in eighth place in the overall national championship of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program, the highest ranking JMC has ever achieved in the overall Hearst competition. JMC also earned seventh place rankings in both the photojournalism and multimedia categories. We will receive medallions for each award.
Students launch Campus Lifeline
Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among college students. Yet, it remains a taboo subject at many universities, underreported and undiscussed. Universities are not required to report the number of suicides or suicide attempts on their campuses. Student media outlets often decline to identify student suicides as such, leaving campus communities to speculate. Instead of examining suicide as a societal problem, student suicides are regarded as private tragedies.
During the Spring 2013 semester, 21 students from JMC and the School of Digital Science, all members of the Web Programming for Multimedia Journalism course, examined the complex issue of college suicide on the website Campus Lifeline: A Report on College Suicide through original, in-depth articles.
Kent State's Bateman Blue team places 2nd in National PR Competition
Fantastic breaking news: A team of our PR students has placed second in the Public Relations Student Society of America's national and highly competitive Bateman Award case study competition on anti-bullying. Eighty university teams entered the competition; 68 submitted casebooks in March; and our team advanced over 65 of these schools to the final round, eventually winning second place. Amazing work!
We congratulate all PR students who entered this prestigious competition and especially members of our nationally ranked "Bateman Blue" team, all of them senior PR majors: Kirsten Bowers, Wezley Garlick, Mary Kate Garvey, Caitlin Potts, and Lyndsey Sager. We also thank and congratulate their faculty adviser, Professor Tim Roberts, and their professional adviser, Erin Orsini, a 2012 KSU PR grad who works at True Digital Strategies.
Scholarship and Award Ceremony achieves new record
JMC gains two new endowed scholarshipsFifty-one students won a record-setting $64,000 in endowed scholarships and gifts and were honored at JMC’s annual Scholarship and Awards Ceremony during Student Success Week.
JMC celebrates 2013 journalism honor society inductees
Twenty juniors and seniors were inducted into Kappa Tau Alpha (KTA), the national honor society for journalism and mass communication, and a senior electronic media major was honored as JMC’s top scholar at a ceremony held during Student Success Week.

JMC newsroom advisor named new assistant professor of journalism
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication announces that Susan Kirkman Zake is the new assistant professor of journalism, focusing on multimedia. Her selection demonstrates JMC’s commitment to moving forward with a multimedia curriculum and remaining relevant with the industry and our students.

JMC student journalists and student media outlets continue to earn regional awards in the most award-winning academic year in JMC’s history.
JMC’s first News21 Fellow begins investigative reporting on post-9/11 veterans
Daniel Moore, a junior majoring in newspaper journalism, is one of 24 student journalists from 12 universities around the country conducting a national investigative reporting project on post-9/11 veterans as part of the Carnegie-Knight News21 in-depth journalism program. Moore is the first JMC student to be awarded a prestigious News21 Fellowship. News21 is headquartered at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University.
Five JMC students earn $3,000 scholarships
JMC students won five of seven Akron Press Club scholarships this year. Four JMC students have been selected for scholarships in memory of longtime Akron Beacon Journal Editor John S. Knight and public relations professional Ludel Sauvageot; a fifth has been selected for a $3,000 Akron Press Club scholarship. This year’s Knight scholars are Kathryn Coduto, Lydia Coutré and Tyler Pina of Kent State and each receives a $3,000 scholarship. The Sauvageot scholar, who also receives $3,000, is Kirsten Bowers of Kent State, and Carrie Blazina of Kent State has been selected by the Press Club for a $3,000 scholarship.
Student media advertising staff earns National College Newspaper Awards
Students and staff of Student Media’s advertising staff traveled to San Diego last week for the annual College Newspaper Business and Advertising Managers convention.
This year was the 41st National CNBAM convention. Students and staff spent time in sessions focusing on new digital concepts, social media, design and the changing look of college student media departments.
The students participated in the student media competition and placed third in the nation for the Best Print Ad Campaign. Student Sales Manager Paul Gimmel finished fourth in the nation for Best Sales Manager.
Perkins Bowen Wins 2013 Indiana Scholastic Journalism Award
The Ball State University Department of Journalism presented associate professor Candace Perkins Bowen with the 2013 Indiana Scholastic Journalism award at its annual conference earlier this month. Bowen is also the director for the Center for Scholastic Journalism.
