6 new fulltime faculty members joining JMC this academic year

Renovation of Franklin Hall is not the only way the KSU administration has shown its support for Kent JMC.

Six new fulltime tenure track faculty lines were given to the school for the 2006-2007 academic year. Five have been filled, and one search is underway with the goal of having the sixth faculty member on board by the start of Spring Semester 2007.

JMC Director, Jeff Fruit, expressed appreciation for the university's backing.

"This kind of support is almost unheard of in this time of shrinking financial resources," he said. "Six new tenure track lines must be a record of some sort!"

"We are really thankful the university sees our program as central to its mission. The new faculty lines allow us to better serve not only our current students, but also those coming to us in the future," Fruit said.

Joining the faculty this year are assistant professors Jacquie Marino, magazine; Jan Leach, news; Joe Murray, electronic media; and Hyangsook Lee, information design. Jeanette Drake joins the faculty as an associate professor in public relations. And, a search is underway for a junior faculty member in the advertising sequence.

Here's a brief bio on each new faculty member:

• Jeanette has more than 13 years experience in public relations and advertising and has taught at the University of Findlay for the past eight years.

She holds a Ph.D. in communication studies from Bowling Green and is accredited in PR (APR) by PRSA. Her research interests are in political and environmental communication, social marketing, and grassroots campaigns.

At KSU, she will focus on developing the new PR graduate program.

• Jacquie has been Associate Editor of Cleveland Magazine since January 2004 and had extensive experience as a free lance magazine writer

before that. Prior to that, she was a staff writer for Cleveland Scene and for The Memphis Flyer.

She earned undergraduate degrees in journalism and political science at Kent State and a master's degree in nonfiction writing from the Johns Hopkins University.

She will teach feature writing and magazine writing and production classes.

• Joe has long experience in media production and at Kent State. Most recently, he has served as head of the Department of New Media Services in

Moulton Hall. Before that he was senior producer/director in the Office of Teleproductions. His background includes work in videography, nonlinear video editing, documentary, electronic media and Web production, computer graphics and art direction.

Knight chair coming to Kent JMC in 2007

Another fulltime faculty line also is in the works for Fall 2007.

Thanks to a generous grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Kent JMC will be home to a Knight Chair in Scholastic Journalism. The school is searching for a distinguished professional journalist to join the faculty as a tenured professor. Read more

He holds a bachelors, masters and Ph.D. from Kent State. He will teach production and Web design courses to start.

• Jan is not really "new" to Kent JMC. For the past three years, the former editor of the Akron Beacon Journal has served as a Professional in

Residence in the school, teaching copy editing and ethics, working on development and organizing the Ethics Workshop co-sponsored by the school and the Poynter Institute. She is also finishing work on her master's degree.

Before going to the Beacon Journal, Jan was managing editor and metro editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer and city editor of the Arizona Republic.

Jan will continue to teach in the news and ethics areas.

• Hyangsook has been an information designer with the Louisville Courier Journal since January 2004. Before that, she spent five years with the Nashville

Tennessean, and she spent a summer on the New York Times.

She received her bachelors degree from Hongik University in Seoul, Korea, and her masters from Ohio University. She did additional study at the Watkins College of Art and Design in Nashville.

Hyangsook will begin teaching information design courses for JMC starting in Spring Semester 2007.

Greg Moore joins School of Art faculty

Long time JMC faculty member, Greg Moore, has joined the School of Art.

Greg joined the JMC faculty in 1972, heading up the photo-illustration program in recent years. He holds M.A. and M.F.A. degrees from KSU. The photo-ill program was moved to Art last year.
