Kent State Electronic Media Production major Courtney Collins is only a junior, but she and a group of her classmates are already producing  a documentary.

Because Collins is one of many students taking the Historical Documentary workshop offered through the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC).

" I was really excited that they offer a class that is so hands-on when I haven't completely dove into my major yet," Collins said.  "I am a little nervous, but we have a great team.  We all have different strengths and weaknesses."

The workshop, taught by professor Dave McCoy, was designed that way - he divided the group of 16 students into smaller teams, with each producing its own documentary.

Each student was assigned his or her own group based on strengths and weaknesses in editing (using the Final Cut Pro program), research, writing and directing.

And each group will produce a 10 to-30- minute documentary on the history of a subject of its choice.

" Every person in each group has to do a little of everything in the production of the documentaries," McCoy said.  "But in each group there are also students who are particularly strong in certain areas."

Junior Electronic Media Production major Todd Pulling, for instance, is particularly strong in the directing aspect of the production, after having produced and directed the library orientation video now shown to incoming Kent State freshman.

" I'm really gung-ho about this project," said Pulling, whose documentary is about the Chrysler Crossfire concept car.  "I would love to make it the best piece Dave McCoy ever had."

Professor Dave McCoy lectures his Historical Documentary class.

Pulling's classmates range from history majors to english majors to education majors, as well as JMC majors.

At the end of the semester, all documentary students will participate in a "world premier," for which McCoy will invite former documentary students to a viewing of the finished products.

Some broadcast news majors are taking the Historical Documentary class this semester as a substitute for the required Broadcast Documentary class, which is offered in the spring.

How did the Broadcast Documentary class begin?
