KENT STATE PUBLIC RELATIONS  STUDENTS AND AKRON-AREA PROFESSIONALS RECEIVE NATIONAL AWARD

KENT, Ohio (January 23, 2006) - Kent State public relations students and Akron-area public relations professionals have been honored with a prestigious national award presented by the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).

The Kent State PRSSA Chapter and the Akron Area Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) received the Teahan Chapter Award for Outstanding PRSA/PRSA Relationship. The award recognizes the strong and mutually beneficial relationship between the two chapters.

For more than 30 years, the Kent State PRSSA Chapter and Akron Area Chapter of PRSA have worked together to cultivate and maintain a solid, symbiotic relationship.

“The excellence of the KSU PRSSA/Akron PRSA relationship is demonstrated by the many joint ventures taken on by the two organizations,” said Carrie Ann Kandes, APR, manager of media relations for Diebold Incorporated and president of the Akron Area Chapter of PRSA. “This growing relationship gives students the opportunity to peer into the lives of PR practitioners, and gives the Akron Area Chapter the opportunity to build relationships with the future members of our chapter.”

During 2005, Akron PRSA and Kent PRSSA collaborated to host several events that created opportunities for students to network with professionals and obtain career guidance.  Programming included:

·                     A networking dinner

·                     A portfolio review session

·                     Student Development/Shadow Day

·                     A luncheon in honor of Alexander Y. Borisov, Russia’s Father of Public Relations, who spoke to five U.S. universities during a lecture tour

Many Akron PRSA members also routinely interact with Kent students as advisors, mentors, teachers and guest speakers.  While Akron PRSA members often serve as guest speakers or panelists for Kent PRSSA meetings, students attend Akron PRSA meetings and events.

“The opportunities for students to interact with area PR professionals on a routine basis offer students a better understanding about how to pursue internship and job opportunities and succeed in the public relations field,” said Michele E. Ewing, assistant professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kent State and faculty advisor for Kent PRSSA.

Last summer, 10 Kent PR majors completed internships for academic credit working under the guidance of Akron PRSA members.

“It’s an honor to be recognized with a national award,” said Elaine Laps, president of Kent PRSSA and a senior PR student. “The Akron PRSA members have shared valuable career advice and a glimpse into the real world of public relations.”
