Still time to register for
Ohio's first state convention
Sign up now for the Ohio Scholastic Media Association’s convention April 4& 5, 2008 on the Kent State University campus. Come Friday afternoon and evening, come all day Saturday or come both! There’s plenty for you to do.
Friday begins with registration from 1 – 2 p.m. in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s new facility in Franklin Hall. http://kentstate.kent.edu/directions/kent/North.asp
At 2, those pre-registered for the Day-of competition MUST to be in their assigned rooms, ready to begin the two-hour contests. With additional categories this year, as many as 12 students from each school can compete, and designers will be able to use the high-end computers in Franklin Hall’s labs.
Others not entered will have a range of sessions available about a wide variety of topics or they may tour campus. Presenters include area newsroom pros and top classroom pros from the School of Journalism and Mass Communications and from area high schools. All sessions will be in Franklin or Moulton Halls or the Kent State University Student Center. (Not pre-registered for Day-of Events? There might still be room. E-mail OSMA to find out.
At 4. It’s time to relax, see a bit more of campus or hustle to your motel room to get ready for the Awards Banquet. Held in the Student Center dining room on the Second Floor, this event will allow students a chance to get acquainted with fellow journalists while enjoying a meal prepared by the University’s top chefs. (Yes, college food doesn’t always come from a cafeteria line!)
Keynoter is the witty and amusing Jack Kennedy, president of the Journalism Education Association and a former Dow Jones Newspaper Fund High School Journalism Teacher of the Year who lives near Denver. You’ll be ready to create an even better publication after you’ve heard him!
Awards will be presented for the more than 30 individual categories with honorable mention, excellent or superior designations. Overall publications will earn placements and even the top Golden Flash Award. And find out whose design will be the new logo for OSMA!
Saturday’s FIVE sessions start at 9 a.m. and run until 2 p.m. Choose from a wide range of topics, including writing, editing, design, multimedia, broadcast, law and ethics, and much more. The last session will be presentation of Day-of Awards from Friday’s contests. This will be in the one-of-a-kind FirstEnergy Interactive Auditorium with its high-end wireless technology. Want to grab a bite in the middle of the day? Franklin and Moulton Halls are right across Main Street from Chiptole’s, Wendy’s, Burger King and other great spots. Have sessions in the Student Center? There’s plenty to choose from in the Hub Food Court.
So don’t miss this chance to be part of an exciting, first-ever state convention. If you haven’t signed up already, do so today!
